Former Israeli ambassador to London was reprimanded over ‘security breaches’

articlemain

Israel’s former ambassador to the United Kingdom, Daniel Taub, returned to Jerusalem last year following allegations of security breaches at the ambassador’s residence in St John’s Wood.

The London-born Mr Taub, who began his posting to Britain in 2011, had been planning a fifth year as ambassador.

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs conducted an internal probe relating to concerns over unauthorised visitors in the residence and Mr Taub has been cleared.

Since his return to Jerusalem, he has been mentioned as candidate to head a special government task-force on confronting BDS and the “delegitimisation” of Israel, a post which so far has not been created.

He is currently a candidate for the position of legal counsel at the ministry.

Mark Regev, the prime minister’s spokesman to foreign media, has been appointed as Mr Taub’s replacement. He is set to arrive in London later this month.

Recent reports on the case in various Israeli newspapers have referred to Mr Taub as a senior Israeli diplomat serving in Europe, but his name began to circulate on the internet.

This morning, the Guardian became the first newspaper to publicly name him as the diplomat involved.

A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem expressed “disgust at the publication of untruthful allegations regarding one of the finest members of the foreign service”.

It added: “Following a thorough investigation by the Inspector General of the Ministry, it was determined that there had been no criminal or disciplinary wrongdoing and that the issue related to a breach of security protocol. The issue has been addressed and concluded.”
