The Conference of European Rabbis is spreading its wings with the launch of an international division able to support other Orthodox rabbis outside the continent including the Middle East.
Rabbis from 15 countries from Latin America, Asia and North Africa - which included Azerbaijan, Colombia, Iran, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates - discussed the practicalities at the CER’s 32nd convention in Munich at the end of last month.
The division will offer support and training in such areas as Beth Din procedures and community engagement through education and outreach.
The CER’s president, Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt said, “This is a truly historic moment for the CER.
“Wherever rabbis request our help, we will aid them. We are proud to play our part in strengthening and celebrating Jewish life in Europe and in other communities around the world who have sought our help and expertise.”
Rabbi Goldschmidt will oversee the new division along with Chief Rabbi of France, Haim Korsia, and Rabbi David Yosef of Israel.
Rabbi Goldschmidt, the Chief Rabbi of Moscow, left Russia for Israel some weeks ago after refusing to offer support for the country’s invasion of Ukraine, it emerged earlier this month.
