Eric William Dane, the actor best known for his roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at 53, less than a year after revealing he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
His family announced Thursday that he passed following a “courageous battle” with the disease, surrounded by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. “He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always,” the statement said. Dane’s family said his daughters and wife were “the centre of his world.”
Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane was raised by his Jewish mother. He reportedly celebrated Jewish holidays while growing up and had a bar mitzvah. His ancestry included Jewish lineage from Russia and Austria.
Dane publicly shared his ALS diagnosis in April 2025 and quickly became a vocal advocate for research and awareness. Just earlier this month, Dane was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in health for his advocacy work. “I’m trying to save my life, and if my actions can move the needle forward for myself and countless others, I’m satisfied,” he told the publication.

In November last year, he portrayed a firefighter confronting ALS in NBC’s Brilliant Minds, and in December joined the board of directors of Target ALS, which campaigns to increase research and treatment for the disease.
In June, two months after his diagnosis, he told an American morning television show that the diagnosis made him “angry” because Dane lost his father to suicide at a young age, and now “there’s a very good chance I’m going to be taken from my girls while they’re very young.”
Dane made his television debut on The Wonder Years in 1993. He gained wider recognition as Jason Dean on Charmed before landing the role of Dr. Mark Sloan – affectionately nicknamed “McSteamy” – on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy (2006–2012; 2021). In 2019, he returned to widespread attention with his portrayal of Cal Jacobs in the acclaimed HBO drama Euphoria.
His film credits include X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, Burlesque, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
Colleagues and co-stars paid tribute to Dane’s talent and warmth. Grey’s Anatomy co-star Patrick Dempsey called him “a joy to work with” and praised his humour and intelligence, while Kim Raver remembered his comedic timing on set.

Euphoria creator Sam Levinson described working with Dane as “an honour,” and Alyssa Milano highlighted his devotion to his family. Ashton Kutcher and Nina Dobrev also shared messages of admiration, noting his generosity and commitment to raising ALS awareness.
