JC columnist Miriam Shaviv helped found a Partnership Minyan, an Orthodox service where women take on more roles, such as reading from the Torah.

This was decried in some quarters as being against 'authentic Jewish tradition.'

In this talk, she argues that the notion of one authentic tradition is a myth which stems from a lack of familiarity with the history of Judaism. While we are a people who claim to revere history, she says, we often seem to prefer myths.
