Hundreds have attended the funeral of Lori Gilbert Kaye, the woman who was killed in the Chabad of Poway synagogue shooting trying to protect her rabbi.

Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, who was badly wounded by the gunman and said Ms Kaye's actions saved his life, was among those to attend the service on Monday.

Her daughter Hannah Kaye told mourners at Monday's service that her mother had practised "radical empathy".

"My mother thrived and lived her entire life for the sake of friendship, to give flowers to people all over San Diego and from the world, to bask in the glory of connection, of story, of history. My mother’s friends are a rabbi. She was a rainbow. Her relationships were one of the things that made her most proud," Hannah Kaye said.

"My mother raised me to become like her, to woman who embraced all people, to give to all people, to love all people."

The attack on the synagogue took place on the last day of Passover.
