West Midlands police have opened a criminal investigation into activist group the Anti Zionist Movement after it posted about “zio eradication” ahead of its launch event in Birmingham this coming Sunday.
The event was cancelled after the venue, The Old Print Works, received hundreds of complaints and said it could not provide “a safe space” on the day.
The event would have featured speakers including controversial academic David Miller and suspended NHS doctor Rahmeh Aladwan.
The group stated it was for “liberation via zio eradication” on its social media, and promotional material for the event published online stated it was “pro armed resistance” and “campaigns against Jewish Supremacy”.

West Midlands Police announced today that it has opened a formal criminal investigation into offences on a social media post related to the event.
The force told the JC: “We’re aware of an event which had been due to take place at a venue in Balsall Heath on Sunday. We are also aware that the venue has since announced that it will not be hosting the event.
“Our officers continue to work to understand the plans of the event organisers. We continue to liaise with key stakeholders, including a meeting with members of the local Jewish community which was held with senior officers this afternoon (5 February).
“Today we have started a criminal investigation into potential offences within a social media message which has been used to promote the event.”

Welcoming the cancellation of the event, Birmingham City Council Leader Cllr John Cotton said: “Any event or group that seeks to divide our communities and stoke division, this group is not welcome in Birmingham."
