A man was arrested after allegedly performing a Nazi salute outside a kosher supermarket in Hendon on Sunday.

Shomrim, the volunteer orthodox neighbourhood security group, detained the man. They said he was shouting abuse outside Tapuach in Brent Street.

Police were called to the scene at around 3.20pm and arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of a religiously aggravated public order offence.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police told the JC: “He was taken to a west London police station. Following investigation, he was released with no further action.”

The arrest came days after a driver pleaded guilty to rolling down his window, performing the salute and shouting ‘Heil Hitler’ outside a Jewish primary school in north London.

The incident outside Wolfson Hillel school in Southgate took place on April 20.

Stephen Panagi pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service for a racially aggravated breach of the Public Order Act. He has also been ordered to attend a session on Holocaust education.

A Community Security Trust spokesman said after Panagi's sentencing: ”It is important that the police and the Crown Prosecution Service take these cases seriously and deal with the offenders.

“This case and subsequent sentence serves as a reminder for anyone who thinks they can engage in antisemitism, and get away with it, that the law does not tolerate this sort of despicable behaviour.

"This case shows it is always worth reporting antisemitic abuse to the Police and CST so that offenders can be brought to justice.”
