A Jewish social club in Manchester – located a stone’s throw from the shul that was the target of the Yom Kippur terror attack – was evacuated on Monday after a “suspicious substance” was discovered in an envelope.
The Nicky day centre on Middleton Road in Crumpsall, which is opposite Heaton Park Synagogue, was evacuated by police as a precaution.
Greater Manchester Police later confirmed the substance was "non-suspicious" but acknowledged the degree of tension within the Jewish community following the horrific attack two weeks ago in which two people were murdered by an Islamist knifeman.
GMP told the community that it appreciated the community's co-operation while the incident was investigated.
It is understood that the envelope contained a flower which had died and dispersed its seeds.
Earlier, the force said it was aware of the concern such a discovery may cause “after the events at the nearby Heaton Park synagogue earlier this month".
Two people died and three others were taken to hospital after Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, drove a car at members of the public before stabbing people outside the synagogue on 2 October.
Adrian Daulby, 53, and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz were killed, with police later revealing Daulby was hit by police gunfire as officers tried to stop the attacker.
