Austrian authorities have uncovered a weapons cache in Vienna that is believed to be linked to Hamas for use in “possible terrorist attacks in Europe,” the government has said.
The announcement came after the arrest on Monday of a British man who faces extradition to Germany, where he is accused of playing a key role in a Hamas-linked terror cell plotting attacks on Jewish targets.
The man, who is aged 39 and cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on Monday and appeared later the same day at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, according to ITV News, which first reported on the case.
The suspect – who is reportedly the son of a senior Hamas official – is wanted by federal police in Germany as a part of a major counter-terrorism operation that last month led to the arrest in Berlin of three men suspected of preparing acts of violence against Jewish targets in Germany on behalf of Hamas. The terrorist group denied any connection to the three men.
German prosecutors have called the trio Hamas operatives and allege they are responsible for sourcing weapons and ammunition to be used in acts of domestic terror targeted at Jewish or Israeli institutions.
The men were identified only as German citizens Abed Al G and Ahmad I, and Lebanese-born Wael F M, in line with the country’s privacy laws.
The British man arrested this week is said to have first come to the attention of German counterterror police in June. He is accused of overseeing the transportation of firearms into Germany and allegedly met a member of the terror cell while under surveillance.
According to Germany’s federal prosecutor, the suspect “took over five handguns and ammunition … [and] then transported the weapons to Austria and stored them in Vienna.
“These actions served to prepare terrorist attacks on Israeli or Jewish facilities in Germany.”
The suspect was remanded in custody after the National Crime Agency received an extradition request from German prosecutors and is due to appear in court via video link next week.
Once he is extradited, he will be brought before an investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice in Germany, the country’s federal prosecutor said.
