Jewish community leaders have warned of a heightened security risk following the fresh outbreak of hostilities in the Middle East over the weekend.
The Community Security Trust (CST) said that while it did not have “specific intelligence” of a raised threat, “Iran has long used terrorism against Jews and Israelis around the world. This is a primary reason for the many security measures that are in place throughout our community.”
It urged community members to adhere to existing security protocols that include avoiding congregating outside communal buildings, to disperse quickly on leaving and to report any suspicious activity immediately to the CST’s emergency helpline.
In a statement, the Board of Deputies said: “Over recent days, we have been in contact with the UK government to seek assurance around security for our community here, and appropriate assistance to British citizens in Israel.
“We urge everyone in that situation to follow instructions from UK and Israeli authorities, and there are links to the information via the Board of Deputies website.”
The Board said Iran had “long posed a threat to its people, the region and the world, with UK intelligence warning about its hostile actions here in Britain.
“Whilst military action should always be a last resort, the Iranian regime’s refusal to engage constructively about its ballistic missile programme, its terror proxies or comprehensively renouncing its nuclear weapons programme, is why we have arrived at this point.”

As Iran launched retaliatory strikes on Israel, more than 1,000 people logged into virtual prayers organised by the United Synagogue after Shabbat on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, diners at the busy kosher restaurants in Golders Green saw the streets packed with cars flying the Royal Lion Flag and hooting as ex-pat Iranians celebrated news of the death of the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
