Group commits itself to boycotting the Jewish state, a policy UJS calls a 'tired campaign that has little to no impact on the reality of the situation in Israel and Palestine'

The Union of Jewish Students has said it is "disappointed yet not surprised" after the NUS Disabled Students Campaign declared itself "proudly anti-Zionist" as it passed a pro-BDS motion at its conference.

"We do not hold Jewish or Israeli students personally responsible for the actions of the Israeli government,” said the motion that the campaign passed at its conference on Wednesday.

"We are proudly anti-racist, anti-colonial, anti-Zionist and thus support the Palestinian struggle for their liberation."

UJS President Hannah Rose said: "We are disappointed, yet not surprised, that the NUS Disabled Students Campaign have passed BDS policy at their conference.

"BDS is a tired campaign that has little to no impact on the reality of the situation in Israel and Palestine as well as being highly divisive, dampening progressive voices and often leading to victimisation of Jewish and Israeli students."

The motion also said the NUS votes in support of boycotting Israel in 2014 and 2018 "represented a breakthrough for an organisation with a long history of Israeli apologism".

It then attacked former NUS President and now MP Wes Streeting for attending an anti-BDS workshop in 2009 and the NUS for hosting Shimon Peres at an event in 2003.

Ms Rose added: "The fact that the motion included a commitment to being an ‘anti-Zionist’ organisation and condemning past NUS engagement with the late Shimon Peres speaks volumes about the real intentions of this motion.

"Far from a motion seeking to advance the causes of peace, instead it objects to the Jewish people’s right of national self-determination, and attacks politicians who have won the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to achieve peace.

"We will continue to support and work towards the two-state solution in Israel and Palestine, ensuring self-determination and lasting peace for all in the region.

"We congratulate the brave Jewish students who spoke up against this motion, and thank our allies for their support."

The motion was brought by Ilyas Nagdee, NUS Black Students Officer, who previously appeared to support violence against Israelis, tweeting: “The people of Palestine do not need to show anger on your terms. Their resistance does not need to be palatable to you… no resistance to an occupying force has happened through friendly natter.

“As the waves of settler-colonialism, racist laws, child prisoners and indiscriminate murder continue you want them to lead a nice liberal resistance for a Western gaze.”
