Trade unionists gather for conference on ‘turning back the tide’ of Israel boycotts

articlemain

A conference aimed at discussing effective ways to oppose boycotts of Israel is taking place in London today.

Organised jointly by Trade Union Friends of Israel (Tufi) and the We Believe in Israel grassroots group, the events will see around 50 delegates from trade unions attend from across Britain.

It is the third major gathering of pro-Israel anti-boycott activists from unions.

Steve Scott, Tufi director, said: “This event will boost Tufi’s work in opposition to boycotts and delegitimisation of Israel, which harm the prospects of peace and the livelihoods of Israeli and Palestinian workers and also strengthen the links between Israeli and British trade unionists.”

Participants will discuss ways to have a “more educated debate in their unions, which would aid Israeli and Palestinian workers, rather than a one-sided condemnation of Israel”, organisers said.

Avital Shapira of the Histadrut – Israel’s trade union conference – will explain the organisation’s work and its efforts to help Israeli and Palestinian union members.

Among the expected speakers at the event are Dave Rich, Community Security Trust deputy communications director; Joan Ryan, Labour Friends of Israel chair; and Michael Leahy, Tufi chair.

Luke Akehurst, director of We Believe in Israel, said: “Turning back the tide of boycotts and delegitimisation of Israel in the unions is a major priority.

“This third training day will show there are grassroots trade union activists out there ready to fight for the trade union movement in the UK to have a more educated, fair and balanced position on Israel.”
