An “experimental” dramatist described by an interviewer as an “American leftist Buddhist Jewish playwright” is one of the couple who alerted police to the noisy row between Boris Johnson and his partner Carrie Symonds.

Police arrived at the Camberwell flat shared by Mr Johnson and Ms Symonds on Friday after Eve Leigh and her musician husband Tom Penn called the police from their neighbouring apartment.

Ms Leigh, 34, has accused the Tories of “pretending to respect the memories of the Holocaust dead whilst closing borders and setting up camps”. In her Twitter account, which has now been deleted, she wrote that she had given Mr Johnson “the finger”.

The New York-born writer is the daughter of Mitch Leigh, who won a Tony award for the Broadway musical Man of La Mancha. Her own work has been performed at the London’s Gate and Finborough theatres and in 2017, she became the first artist in residence at the experimental stage of the National Theatre of Greece.

In a statement, Mr Penn said they had recorded their neighbours rowing out of concern “for the welfare of those involved.

“After a loud scream and banging, followed by silence, I … with my wife agreed we should check on our neighbours. I knocked three times at their front door, but there was no response. I went back upstairs into my flat, and we agreed that we should call the police.”
