The new series of BBC’s popular cooking contest MasterChef is to feature its first kosher challenge, the JC has learned.

In the semi-final round, participants will spend time in one of London’s kosher restaurants where they will be introduced to the joys of Jewveau cuisine including how to serve schmaltz herring three ways.

They will then be set the task of choosing the right ingredients to prepare a meal fit for Rabbi Tash Harman, from Masorti’s kashrut division.

While five years ago MasterChef finalist Emma Spitzer presented latkas and Israeli-inspired dishes, this is the first time an episode of the competition to find Britain’s best amateur cook has gone kosher.

Joining regular presenters Gregg Wallace and John Torode will be world renowned food writer Esther Poor-Imi to help check whether contestants have passed their kosher taste test.

PR consultant Meg Gillatt of Astor Associates said, “We want the show to celebrate the richness of Britain’s culinary diversity. And there’s nothing Gregg likes better than a good kugel.

“We know that the kosher challenge is going to be tough because there are a lot of details to take in. Everyone will probably know already that they’ll have to pass on the pork belly but they’ll need to remember to give mussels a miss and stay off scallops.”

The programme’s best kosher dish will star in a special Gefiltefest session at JW3 later this year.
