Kosher restaurant 1701 has announced it is shutting up shop on its current site at Bevis Marks Synagogue in the City of London.

A spokesperson for the restaurant, which opened less than two years ago, said that "the historical connection with Bevis Marks has been wonderful but unfortunately the location has proved limiting.

“Given the restaurant's acclaim, we now feel it necessary to relocate to realise our full potential. A new site has been identified with a landlord who shares our vision.”

Its fine-dining take on Jewish dishes from around the world earned it a place two years running in the Great Britain & Ireland Michelin Guides - one of only four kosher restaurants in the world featured in the guides.

The owners said: “We are very proud of the wonderful reputation that our unique contemporary take on Jewish cuisine has already garnered.

“We intend to build on this by rolling out the 1701 brand into other channels such as event catering, fine dining deliveries and a retail presence, as well as re-opening Restaurant 1701 in a new location.”

In today's JC The Sephardi Kashrut Authority announced it no longer licences the restaurant.
