Kosher restaurant 1701 has made it into the new edition of the Michelin Guide, becoming the only kosher establishment currently included in the prestigious list of the country’s best hotels and restaurants.
Located in the grounds of Bevis Marks Synagogue, in the City of London, 1701 has been open for only four months. It serves fine-dining cuisine — a signature dish is braised lamb neck in filo pasty — as well traditional fare such as chicken soup. It is licensed under the Sephardi Kashrut Authority.
Owner Lionel Salama said he was delighted at being selected. “It is great to achieve this in such a short space of time since opening,” he said.
“Our restaurant is different from the others in the guide. Jewish cuisine is not something that is celebrated enough in this country.”
As pleased as he was, Mr Salama said it was only the first step. His ultimate goal was a coveted Michelin star.
“A star is next. It’s a long way to go for the restaurant.”
Rebecca Burr, the guide’s editor, said that the entries in the new edition were the most diverse and varied ever included.
