The film will be a proper sequel to the original film, not a re-imagining like the 2016 all-female version

If the 2016 all-female remake of Ghostbusters didn't quite hit the right note for you, then you might be in luck.

A Ghostbusters sequel is in the works, set in the same universe and apparently staying true to the original film.

Written and directed by Jason Reitman, son of the original film's director Ivan Reitman, the film is set for 2020.

Reitman, known for Tully, Juno and Up in the Air, said he had alwys been a fan of Ghostbusters. and even had a cameo role in the original, although it was cut.

“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set [of the 1984 film]," he told Entertainment Weekly. "I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans.“

He has insisted however that this is not a reboot of the original, describing it as "the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot.”

It has not been announced yet whether any of the original cast (Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd - Jewish filmmaker and actor Howard Ramis died in 2014) will be in the new film, which is set in the present day.

The 1984 supernatural comedy, written by stars Dan Ackroyd and Howard Ramis, was the highest grossing film of its time.
