"I have genuinely seen better facilities, health facilities, in war zones, in developing countries around the world,” she was reported to have said.
She “undoubtedly” received better treatment than those around her, however, she told the audience.
“I got through because of who I am. Also the doctor who saw me was Palestinian, as it turns out. Almost all the doctors in Birmingham seemed to be,” she said.
“He was sort of like, ‘I like you. You voted for a ceasefire.’ I got through quicker.”
Last November, Phillips quit a shadow ministerial role to vote in favour of an immediate ceasefire.
Sir Keir Starmer had instructed his MPs not to support the SNP amendment, and instead to vote for a Labour amendment that called for longer pauses in the conflict to enable the delivery of aid.
Phillips has not responded to a request for comment from the JC.
