Former actress Mara Wilson - who's best known for her childhood roles in Mrs Doubtfire and an adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda - has admitted that she found Dahl's antisemitism difficult to deal with.

Wilson, who is now 30 and a writer, told Kveller that what the website terms as the writer's "potential antisemitism" is "definitely a difficult thing to think about". It meant his work was a "complicated legacy," she added.

"I can really only think about my own experiences," she said. "The Dahls have been wonderful to me for many years.That’s how I reconciled it. What I do with them is good for the world, they help and encourage children."

Wilson, whose mother is Jewish continued: "It’s important to call out antisemitism when you see it, although I didn’t know about those things until many, many years later."

Wilson - who is still involved with the Dahl family through judging a new writing competition in the US - said she had loved the book Matilda before she starred in the film. Naturally, when asked which was her favourite Dahl tome, she replied "It’s definitely Matilda!"
