The condition of an Israeli police officer is said to be improving after being injured in an attack by two Palestinians in Jerusalem.

The policeman was stabbed in the upper body outside of the Old City’s Chains Gate, near the Temple Mount.

Israeli news outlets are reporting that the two attackers were shot by other policemen present at the scene. One was killed at the scene; the other was taken to hospital in a critical condition before being pronounced dead on Thursday evening.

Both suspects were minors.

“The stabbing victim was treated at the scene for a stab wound in his upper body, following which he was transported to the hospital for further care while fully conscious,” Dov Maisel, United Hatzalah paramedic who was among the first at the scene, told the Jerusalem Post.

CCTV footage of the incident showed the suspects, holding knives, approaching the group of officers and suddenly attacking one policeman.

The other officers then pulled out their guns and shot the suspects several times.

Gates to the Temple Mount were temporarily closed following the incident.

This incident comes after clashes at Temple Mount on Sunday as the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha coincided with the Jewish fast day of Tisha B’Av.

Israeli security forces scuffled with Palestinians at the holy site — known to Muslims as Haram esh-Sharif — after protesters had gathered amid rumours that Jewish visitors would be permitted entry.
