Push for Trump trip to Israel stays on ice

articlemain

Despite attempts by supporters of Donald Trump to persuade the presumptive Republican presidential candidate to visit Israel before the US elections, it remains unclear whether the trip will go ahead.

A scheduled visit in December 2015 was cancelled in the wake of Mr Trump's call to prevent Muslims from entering the US.

In recent weeks, there have been reports that the visit was once again on the cards, especially following the endorsement of Mr Trump by Sheldon Adelson, the pro-Israel casino tycoon.

On Sunday, however, Mr Trump himself sounded skeptical. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, he said: "I don't think (a foreign visit) registers with the voters, to be honest with you. What I really want to do is to focus on our country and on the election, but I might. I've been invited by numerous countries to go."

Trump supporters, including Mr Adelson, hope that a visit to Israel will help convince wary Jewish Republican donors open their wallets.

Sources in Jerusalem say that Mr Netanyahu is not eager to have Mr Trump visit as it could anger rival factions within the Republican party, as well as the Democratic frontrunner, Hillary Clinton.
