A Belgian model has provoked outrage by appearing to pose naked from a terrace overlooking the Western Wall for a photograph.

Marisa Papen said she took the photograph in the Old City in Jerusalem on May 14 this year, the anniversary of Israel's independence and the day the United States relocated its embassy to Jerusalem.

“While the rest of Jerusalem was celebrating,” she wrote on her blog, “I was enjoying the afternoon sun on a rooftop after a morning of running around in the desert — capturing our last frames of the trip.”

The photograph, which shows Ms Papen leaning back on white plastic chair, is framed in such a way as to exclude most of the Dome of the Rock and the Temple Mount, which is a holy site for Muslims and Jews.

But the Western Wall plaza and the separate prayer areas for men and women are fully visible.

Ms Papen's blog contains a series of photographs showing her naked at a variety of landmarks around the world. She was arrested and spent a night in a police cell in Egypt last year after appearing naked at a temple in Luxor.

Her post containing the Western Wall image, which is titled “The Wall of Shame”, contains a series of images from Israel.

“I know my mailbox is about to fill up with threats and angriness again - to all the people typing down their furiosity [sic] right now, save your energy,” she wrote.

But some readers did not follow Ms Papen's advice.

“Like the photo. Some religious people might not like it as much,” wrote one commenter, who called themselves “Moses”.

Another wrote: “You are terrible! No respect for no one!!”

Astaris added: “The photo's clearly been cropped, because the golden dome (Omar - Dome of the Rock) is just an inch to the left and al Aktza Mosque is just an inch to the right. So much for breaking boundaries...”
