Man whose mother was denied burial for refusing to divorce his wife ‘reneges on promise’

Yisrael Meir Kin, who has reportedly refused to grant the get for 14 years, tells Israeli media he never agreed to conditions for his mother's burial

A man whose mother’s burial was delayed by Israeli rabbinical authorities until he agreed to grant his wife a get has reportedly reneged on the agreement now that his mother has been buried.

David Lau, Israel’s Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi, made the rare ruling on Tuesday ordering Jerusalem’s burial society not to proceed with the burial of the mother of Yisrael Meir Kin, who has reportedly refused to grant his wife a get for the last 14 years.

It is almost unheard of for rabbinical authorities to delay a Jewish burial in such a fashion, but the decision was made after a US-based beth din ruled it was “specifically applicable as the mother supported her son in refusing his wife a get.”

The burial was allowed to take place only after representatives of the man’s family made a clear commitment that the get would be granted. The Chief Rabbinate said the family of the husband deposited $20,000 (£16,330) as collateral to ensure Mr Kin fulfilled his commitment.

But Mr Kin has since released a video in which he claimed: “no-one from the Rabbinate, not Rabbi Lau, nor any of his subordinates ever contacted me at any point, and nobody else representing me or my name ever agreed to any conditions such as agreeing to pay money to be left as a collateral until a get is delivered."

In the video, which was published by Israel’s Arutz Sheva news channel, Mr Kin also accused Rabbi Lau of having a personal interest in the case, saying the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi was a relative of his estranged wife.

He claimed that “a get has been waiting for my wife for over ten years at the Beit Din of Shaarei Mishpat in the United States where my wife and I have lived all of our lives."

A spokesperson for the Israeli Chief Rabbinate responded by telling Arutz Sheva that it regretted that Mr Kin“continues his crooked conduct and is now attacking the Beit Din."

It reiterated that its own ruling had come about as a result of a decision from the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada, based in New York.

The spokesperson said Rabbi Lau would continue “his uncompromising war on the phenomenon of divorce refusal and will do everything in his power, including the most severe sanctions, to end any case of get-refusal that may develop."
