The Israeli human rights community and the radical left are in an uproar over a TV report in which a veteran Israeli campaigner for Palestinian rights is seen taking pride in telling the Palestinian Authority about Arabs selling land to Israelis - information that was likely to lead to their execution.
Ezra Nawi, one of the founders of Ta'ayush, a group of Israelis and Palestinians operating against settlement activity in the Hebron area, says on camera: "I immediately hand their pictures and phone numbers to the [Palestinian] Preventive Security. The authority catches them and kills them. But before they kill them, they beat them up a lot."
The footage, which was aired on the Uvda investigative programme on Channel Two, was collected by a right-wing group that had penetrated Israeli human-rights organisations.
Neither the right-wing organisation nor the Uvda journalists could verify whether Mr Nawi was telling the truth and had actually caused the deaths.
The footage was condemned across the political spectrum. However, politicians on the left said that it was an attempt by some on the right to "smear" the entire human rights movement.
On Monday, police arrested Mr Nawi at Ben Gurion airport. Mr Nawi said that the Palestinian he reported to the PA had been "trying to libel me among Palestinians, so I had no choice but to report him to the authority so I wouldn't be considered a land-buyer".
