The death toll of this morning’s terror attack in Jerusalem has risen to six, after another victim died of their wounds at Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus.
Two suspects are reported to have opened fire at the Ramot Junction near East Jerusalem
A further seven people have been taken to hospital in serious condition and a total of more than 20 wounded, according to Magen David Adom.
The agency identified the six slain victims as a man and a woman in their 50s, three men in their 30s and one other person. One of the dead has been named as Levi Yitzhak Pash.
The attackers are reported to have boarded a bus and fired on passengers.
One eyewitness told Channel 12: “I was on the bus. The bus was packed.
"The moment [the driver] opened the door… terrorists came. It was terrible. I was by the back door, I fell on everyone and escaped, I saved myself.
"There was gunfire there beyond anything imaginable. I can’t believe I’m standing here. Indescribable gunfire.”
Images from the scene apparently show the weapon used, reported to be a makeshift “Carlo” gun, also known as the Carl Gustav machine gun.
Similar firearms, made in illegal workshops in the West Bank, have previously been used in terror attacks against Israelis.
Both suspects were subsequently “neutralised” by an IDF soldier and an armed civilian, Israeli authorities confirmed.
Channel 12 reported that the IDF ordered the closure of security checkpoints between Jerusalem and the West Bank, pending a situational assessment at its Central Command headquarters.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also convened a situational assessment with the heads of the defense establishment, his office said. He has since visited the site of the attack to share his condolences.
This is the second terror attack on Ramot Junction in recent years, with the last coming in February 2023.
In that instance, Hussein Qaraqa, an Arab-Israeli discharged from a psychiatric hospital days earlier, rammed his car into a bus stop in the area, killing three people.
Qaraqa was shot dead at the scene and officials subsequently announced that hundreds of West Bank bus shelters would be fortified in response.
