Hebron shooter trial looms

articlemain

An Israeli military court has ruled that Elor Azaria, the IDF soldier who shot a wounded Palestinian attacker in the head two weeks ago , would remain on remand at his unit's headquarters until his trial. The Military Attorney-General plans to charge the sergeant with manslaughter.

The autopsy of Abd el-Fatah a-Sharif determined that the shot fired by Sgt Azaria was the direct cause of his death. It also found that the bullets fired 11 minutes earlier, which hit him in various parts of his body, were not deadly. This will make it difficult for the defence to claim that A-Sharif was dying anyway and means that the court battle will focus on Sgt Azaria's motives.

Sgt Azaria and his lawyers claim that he was trying to prevent A-Sharif from detonating a suspected explosive device on his body, a claim partially supported by some of the witnesses on the scene, who also said they believed A-Sharif may have been carrying such a device.

The prosecution maintains that Azaria's motive was retribution for the stabbing of two comrades.
