Israeli defence minister Israel Katz has threatened to reduce Gaza City to rubble if Hamas refuses to agree to Benjamin Netanyahu’s terms for a ceasefire deal and release all its hostages.

Writing on X a day after the Israeli cabinet approved a plan to take control of Gaza City, and the prime minister announced he had instructed negotiations to begin for the release of all remaining hostages and an end to the war in Gaza on terms "acceptable to Israel", Katz vowed that the “gates of hell” would open if its conditions were not met.

“The gates of hell will soon open on the heads of Hamas’ murderers and rapists in Gaza – until they agree to Israel's conditions for ending the war, primarily the release of all hostages and their disarmament.

"If they do not agree, Gaza, the capital of Hamas, will become Rafah and Beit Hanoun," he said.
