Brexit to feature in Israeli university course

Academic says planned course on Britain will be only one of its kind in Israel

An Israeli professor originally from London plans to introduce a course at his university on British politics and society which will cover Brexit.

Professor David Newman says the course, “From Empire to Brexit,” at Ben-Gurion University will be the only one dedicated to the topic at an Israeli university.

Professor Newman, who has been in the UK on sabbatical, has been doing research for a book he is writing on contemporary British Jewry.

But he plans to delay his return to Ben-Gurion to accept the offer of a visiting professorship at the South Asian University in Delhi from January to May next year.

“It takes me out of my comfort zone of Israel and London”, he said. “But the opportunity of engaging with research students from countries who do not normally come into contact with Israeli faculty, is a once in a lifetime opportunity and, hopefully, will lead to an interesting exchange of ideas”.

During his time in Britain, he launched an initiative to bring unused Sifrei Torah from synagogues in London to new Israeli communities.
