The wife of Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been charged with serious fraud and breach of trust.

Sara Netanyahu is accused of misusing public funds at the couple's official and private residences by commissioning state employees to care for her late father and government chefs for private parties.

Police had recommended an indictment earlier this year over the allegations, which Haaretz reported involves unauthorised meal expenses worth 360,000 shekels, or nearly £75,000.

The case will now be heard in court.

A draft indictment said the meals were ordered for the prime minister's residence from gourmet restaurants between 2010 and 2013.

Israeli government regulations state that meals cannot be ordered from outside sources when the official residence has a chef on the staff.

Mrs Netanyahu has previously been accused of abusive treatment of staff and exhibiting a privileged lifestyle.

A former deputy director at the prime minister's official residence has also been charged.

Benjamin Netanyahu himself is not named in this case, although the Israeli Prime Minister and his associates are the subject of several police investigations.
