Discount kosher doughnuts have been flying off the shelves of a Manchester branch of Morrisons this Chanukah after replicating the success of the Stamford Hill branch a year ago.
Long queues were spotted at the Stamford Hill branch last Chanukah after Rabbi Akiva Osher Padwa was drafted to kasher its fryer, kicking off a craze for doughnuts at ten pence apiece.
Rochelle Gardner, the “community champion” of the Morrisons in Whitefield, Manchester, lobbied higher-ups at the supermarket giant’s headquarters, before getting the go-ahead to sell five doughnuts for 60p this year.
The branch sold out on the first day, shifting around 2,000 of the fried treats, and is re-stocking for further sales on Monday evening and Tuesday.

Ms Gardner said: “We’re only doing it on a trial basis this year but we have already sold about 2,000, and we will make double that for tonight.
“The most one person has bought is probably 150 doughnuts, although most people just get a few. We’ll definitely do it again next year, and run it for the whole week.”
The Stamford Hill branch has reprised its offer again this year. Stores in Colindale, in North West London, and Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, will follow suit next year.
