Will and Grace star Debra Messing has revealed how she was asked to wear “fake boobs” on the set of her very first job in Hollywood.
In conversation with actress Sharon Stone as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Messing discussed #MeToo and the expectations put on women in Hollywood.
“I had to wear fake boobs when I first started in Hollywood on my first sitcom,” she said.
“On my first sitcom, they gave me the cutlets and I had just graduated from my masters from NYU in acting and I was like ‘I’m an actress!’ and they're like, ‘here’,” Messing recalled. She said that she thought they "look[ed] stupid" but being new to the industry she felt she couldn't say no. She was told: “The president of the network called and said that he wants you to wear those.”
Thankfully for Messing, her reputation now precedes her and “now, no one comes at me with those things. I’m like ‘I’m flat-chested, I love it.'”
Basic Instinct star Stone also discussed incidents where Hollywood executives criticised her appearance, including the backlash she faced for wearing trousers instead of a dress ibeing told she wasn’t sitting like a "proper woman".
