The giant menorah in Trafalgar Square is back this year, though the annual Chanukah in the Square event cannot take place because of Covid restrictions.

It is backed by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, the Jewish Leadership Council, Chabad and the London Jewish Forum.

“Chanukah in Trafalgar Square is always one of the highlights of my year,” the Mayor said. “While it is disappointing that we cannot gather in person, I’m pleased that we are still able to continue the tradition of hosting a menorah and celebrating the huge role the Jewish community play in the capital.

“The pandemic has shown us the need to recognise the role we all play in supporting and keeping each other safe and I have seen the sacrifices that Jewish communities have made this year to stop the spread of Covid-19.

“As we reach the end of what has been an extraordinarily difficult year, and with a vaccine being rolled out, we can all find new comfort in Chanukah’s central message that, dark as days may seem, light and hope can always be found.” 

 A series of online events are being held during the festival to enable community members to celebrate together.
