Digital Reporter

Location: London office

Salary: Competitive with national papers

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team at the heart of the business as it embraces a digital future.

The Team

The Digital Team is a rapidly expanding part of the JC organisation. Looking to optimise and grow the JC audience in the UK and globally, you’ll be part of an ambitious strategy to build up the JC’s online footprint and attract new readers to the publication.

About You

You have experience in a newsroom at a national or regional publication on the Social, SEO or news desks. You understand the importance of speed and accuracy in reporting breaking news and have an eye for stories that matter to our audience. 

You’ll be capable of multitasking and handling numerous short term and long term projects and ensuring that attention to detail is maintained across the board. 

You will also have a good knowledge of British Jewry and Israel, or a commitment to working hard to developing that knowledge as rapidly as possible.

The Role

As Digital reporter, you will report into the Digital Editor and be responsible for breaking news as well as only-only features and news stories as well as explainers and evergreen content. 

You will also assist on the social media presentation of digital stories, as well as sourcing original pictures and videos for the website and social channels. 

You’ll work with colleagues across the newsroom and are comfortable reporting, interviewing and researching stories for all sections of the paper.

Skills and Experience

You will have:

  1. A strong news sense and an eye for stories in the world of the JC

  2. The intellect and creativity to develop fresh angles on developing stories.

  3. Strong news writing ability and an eye for visual storytelling

  4. A working understanding of media law

It will also be useful if you have a working knowledge of social media scheduling tools as well as basic photo and video editing skills.

Home News Editor

Location: London office

This is an exceptional, once-in-a-career opportunity to be at the helm of a dynamic news operation for a renowned publication that is making an increasing impact both in Britain and globally.

The Team

The News Desk is the beating heart of the JC. You will be running award-winning names recruited from leading national newspapers and working closely together with exceptional young reporters in a closely knit team.

About You

You have extensive experience on a news desk at a national paper or an agency, or you are an established reporter who will already have an extremely good understanding of what a news desk role requires.

You will be an exceptionally capable multi-tasker, ready to take on a challenging variety of tasks, from running in-depth investigations, buy-ups and major interviews to dealing with huge breaking stories, working with reporters in war zones and handling the sensitivities of high-profile politicians and public figures.

The Role

As News Editor you will be running the news team from Monday to Friday, working from our office in central London.

Reporting to the Editor, you will be responsible for the stories in the news section of the newspaper and on the website, with the help and support of the Foreign Editor.

While working to the weekly deadline of the print edition of the JC, you will also oversee stories going up online throughout the week, working closely with the Digital Editor.

Skills and Experience

You will have:

  1. Superlative instincts for news, enabling you to react quickly and decisively to the rapidly changing agenda.

  2. The intellect and creativity to develop fresh angles on developing stories.

  3. Peerless news writing and copy editing ability.

  4. First-class personnel management and communication skills.

  5. An in-depth understanding of media law and the Editors’ Code of Practice.

You will also have a good knowledge of British Jewry and Israel, or a commitment to working hard to developing that knowledge as rapidly as possible.

It will also be useful if you have a working knowledge of Atex, InCopy and InDesign or similar CMS programmes, and good experience of working on digital publications as well as print.

Senior Designer

Location: London office

Salary: Competitive with national papers

The Role

We are looking for a senior designer with a broad range of experience who can produce consistently excellent work.

You will be joining a dynamic art desk and understand how to tell stories visually in both print and digital contexts.

You will be primarily responsible for designing pages for the JC in print, which will include overseeing and producing supplements and magazines. You will work closely with the creative director and deputise for him on occasions.

The role is based in our central London office and will require office working.

You will:

  1. Work closely with section editors, the photo editor, the commercial department and the creative director on layouts and visual storytelling both in print and digital.

  2. Produce creative layouts within the boundaries of established templates and ensuring layout and style consistency across the sections.

  3. Effectively balance competing priorities and manage time to meet deadlines.

  4. Take an active role in design conversations at planning meetings.

  5. Assist other team members with their assignments.

  6. Deliver pages that reflect the high standards of the JC.

  7. Fill in for creative director when needed.

  8. Proof the newspaper, magazine and supplement pages and send them to production.

  9. Produce digital and social media materials for all departments.

Skills and Experience

You have:

  1.  At least three years’ experience in magazine or newspaper design

  2. A passion for journalism with good news judgement.

  3. Demonstrable design and typography skills.

  4. Flexibility to work with both Mac and PC operating systems.

  5. Ability to take on and learn new tasks in a fast-moving, deadline-driven environment.

  6. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  7. Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, Google Suite, Microsoft Word and Excel.

  8. Interest in interactive and digital storytelling.
