Changes are planned to Norwood’s Ravenswood Village residential community in Berkshire in line with revised government policy that only those with complex disabilities should be placed in such communities.

The moves also reflect the findings of an internal review which have been shown to staff.

In the autumn, Norwood will open the state-of-the-art Pamela Barnett and Tager centres at Ravenswood. The former is for those with profound and multiple learning disabilities, the latter for people with complex needs on the autistic spectrum.

“The services which we provide at our homes in Berkshire are at a crossroads,” Norwood chief executive Norma Brier said this week. “We have been planning for a changing future, taking account of the government’s agenda for learning disabilities, and our commitment to a person-centred approach for the people who use our services.”

The village has 150 residents.

Proposed changes include the closure of redundant buildings, moving services to different premises on the site and some staff restructuring.

A head of adults’ services post will be created to work across all of Norwood’s operations. Head of village Rod Clay is bringing forward his retirement to June.

Mrs Brier added that “Norwood remains committed to the continuation of services to people living at Ravenswood. We expect numbers to remain similar for the foreseeable future”.
