A six-year-old boy from Whitefield, North Manchester, has received two awards for bravery in fighting cancer.

Taylor Rudolph, who lives with his parents Rochelle and Martin, suffers from craniopharyngioma, a rare tumour on the pituitary gland at the base of the brain. He has just received a Little Star Award from Cancer Research UK and will soon receive a Starlight Award from Cancer UK.

Mrs Rudolph said: “He was diagnosed last June following a routine eye test at school. He couldn’t see anything out of his right eye. We were told it was just a lazy eye, but it didn’t get better and eventually we took him to a specialist who did an MRI scan. He was diagnosed on June 20 and he had surgery two days later, followed by six weeks of radiotherapy at Christie Hospital.

“He is stable at the moment, but he has lost the sight in his right eye and he will start hormone treatment next week. Because of the tumour, he has also developed another rare condition, diabetes insipidus. Also, the radiotherapy can effect his short- term memory, so he is being assessed by an educational psychologist,” said Mrs Rudolph.

The Starlight Award from Cancer UK will be in the form of a gift of his choice. Taylor, a pupil at Bury and Whitefield Jewish Primary, is a keen Manchester City supporter and his mother said he may want to be a team mascot.
