Chelsea 'to take action' against 'Chasidic Harry Kane' T-shirts

articlemain

Chelsea football club are reportedly set to take action to stop unofficial retailers selling T-shirts featuring Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane depicted as a Chasidic Jew.

The T-shirts were being sold outside the club’s Stamford Bridge ground after the Premier League match against Manchester United last Sunday.

The shirt shows Kane dressed in the garb of a strictly Orthodox Jew, complete with peyot and the words “he’s one of your own”, a reference to the chant about him sung by Spurs supporters.

Tottenham are referred to by their own fans as the Yids and have strong support within the Jewish community. The fans and the club have often been the target of antisemitic abuse.

Another T-shirt shows Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger dressed in red hot-pants with the words “With a pack of sweets and a cheeky smile”, a line from a song sung by some opposition fans.

According to The Times, the garments were being sold from a large stall on private property on the Fulham Road, near Chelsea’s ground.

Arsenal and Tottenham have been made aware of the T-shirts.

Katrina Law, of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust, told The Times: “It’s hugely disappointing that in 2016 anyone could think this was acceptable.

“There’s often an edge to football humour but there is also a line which we’re sure the vast majority of Chelsea fans would recognise. We trust appropriate actions will be taken by Hammersmith and Fulham Council Trading Standards and by Chelsea.”
