The trailer for The Last Jedi, the next film in the Star Wars franchise, debuted online last night.
Included in the trailer are two brief scenes featuring the late Carrie Fisher, which represent her last work. Her character, General Leia Organa, is not set to appear in the final episode of the new trilogy, which will hit cinemas in 2019.
An Instagram post made on behalf of Carrie’s dog, Gary, shows the pup mournfully watching his owner in the trailer.
Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill spoke to fans at New York Comic Con about the Ms Fisher’s role in The Last Jedi.
"You’re going to really love her in The Last Jedi. I know they’re going to try and find a way to close her story in [Episode IX] that gives her the respect she deserves, because [Han Solo] was more prominent in [The Force Awakens], Luke’s a little more prominent in [The Last Jedi], and certainly Leia was meant to be more prominent in [Episode IX]. Worldwide, everyone feels that gap she left, but we all have to hang in there."
Star Wars distributors Disney also released a new poster to coincide with the trailer's arrival, which shows Ms Fisher at the heart of the film:
