Share your favourite filling and you could see it being sold in Carmelli Bakery

Every Jewish festival comes with its own food tradition - honey cake for Rosh Hashanah, matzah brei at Pesach and Chanukah’s latkes.  Purim is all about hamantaschen.

This year, The JC and Carmelli Bakery are giving you the chance to create your dream hamantaschen; AND you will get to share it not just with your family but the community, too.

But first, what are hamantaschen? Get the full low down here . Essentially, they are tasty, triangular cookies usually filled with poppy seeds. The name translates literally as ‘the ears of Haman’ - the villain in the Purim story.

If the thought of making a triangular cookie sounds difficult, have no fear! Just click here for our step-by-step.

Once you’ve mastered the art of the fold, you can think about your filling. Here is a traditional recipe for a filling for Queen Esther.

But all traditions can benefit from a refresh - and sometimes it’s great to be adventurous, break the mould and be a taste sensation.  You’ll find a huge range of fillings on the JC’s recipes pages, like this fig and halva flavour from food editor, Victoria Prever.

And with so many of us home schooling, here's a tasty selection to keep the kids amused.

If you (or they) have long had an idea for a filling, or are inspired to come up with something new, now is your chance. Whether it’s a twist on traditional poppy seed or more modern combination — like pistachio and rosewater or maybe even marshmallow, this is your moment. It could be sweet or savoury, dairy or parev, simple or a festival of colour - the choice is yours.

To enter, head over to the JC’s Instagram, on or before February 4. Find the most recent hamantaschen picture and post in the comments below your suggestion for the perfect triangular treat. Next to that, you’ll need to use the hashtag #JCPurim and also tag the person you’d most like to share your hamantaschen with. You can enter as many times as you like but you’ll need to tag a different friend each time.

An expert panel of the JC’s food editor, Victoria Prever, JC editor, Stephen Pollard and a small group of hungry Year Fours from Yavneh Primary School will select their top six.

Bakers from Carmelli Bakery will bring those ideas to life in their kitchens from which the judges will pick their favourite flavour. The winner will be notified via Instagram direct message on February 19.

The ultimate winning recipe will form part of Carmelli Bakery’s Purim range sold at its Golders Green store from February 23 to 25.

Good luck!
