Joe Jacobson is confident his return to League Two with Wycombe Wanderers will be a short-lived one.
The Cardiff-born defender shunned the advances of Crawley to take a punt on Wycombe following his release from Shrewsbury.
Jacobson, 27, claims the move is no gamble with plans to escape the basement division.
“I want to play as high up as possible. Hopefully that can be with Wycombe,” he said.
“There were other options but you get a gut-feeling sometimes.”
It could have been so different for Jacobsen and Wycombe this summer.
The Chairboys survived by the skin of their teeth last season having only guaranteed their Football League status on a nail-biting final-day.
Jacobson said: “I know the club will not want to go through that experience again. But there’s one thing saying it and then actually doing it.
“There’s a few new players so it will take a bit of time to find our feet and gel.
“But from what I’ve seen there are a lot of good players here. Of course it’s a tough league to get out from as everyone knows.
“I do know though that with consistency and a bit of luck you can go up.”
Wycombe, who remain one of the bookmakers’ favourites for relegation, kick-off their new campaign against Newport County on August 9.
It will mark a rare return across the Severn Bridge for Jacobson, who launched his career just down the road in the Welsh capital.
He said: “My family and friends are my biggest supporters and they attend most games. It will nice to be on familiar ground for when the season starts.”
