Dean Furman has the added incentive to pick himself up from the floor – by winning a new contract at Doncaster.
Furman admits he took his time to recover from the heartbreak of relegation back to League Two last season.
The setback took its toll but the South African midfielder is ready to go again.
And with a potential new deal in the pipeline at the Keepmoat Stadium, Furman will not be short of motivation.
He said: “Relegation did hit the team and myself hard.
“We believed we were good enough to stay up. In the end it wasn’t to be and we are back again at this level having to go all again.
“But that’s the challenge we should all be relishing. I’ve had a taste of the Championship and I would like another crack.
“The aim is to help Doncaster back up and to stay there.
Furman insists his future is on the backburner as he heads into the final year of his contract.
"I would love to stay here long-term,” he said. “I imagine that will be down to how well I'm playing.
"But you don’t want to put too much pressure on yourself so it's something I won't be thinking about for the moment.”
Doncaster’s preparation has hardly been smooth. A failed takeover bid, fronted by pop star Louis Tomlinson of One Direction, collapsed at the 11th hour and the Yorkshireman are now playing catch-up in the search for new players.
Furman, 26, added: “There are some big teams in our division. The likes of Sheffield United, Preston and Bristol City have some financial clout and they will be challenging.
“But we feel we could be one of them once again.
“The takeover falling through was obviously a setback. But you have to move on. Manager Paul Dickov is slowly but surely adding new players and we have been getting stronger with every pre-season game.
“We are ready for the new season.”
