Noah Rubin recorded his first grand slam win after stunning 17th-seeded Benoit Paire with a straight sets victory on the opening day of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

A former winner of Junior Wimbledon, Rubin, who is 19 and from Long Island, won three tie-breakers to set up a second-round clash against Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France.

Ranked 328 Rubin received a wild card entry into the main draw as part of a reciprocal agreement between the US and Australian tennis associations.

Rafa Nadal is a possible second-round opponent for Dudi Sela of Israel, if he can beat Benjamin Becker.
