A brace from Simon Lester helped Maccabi 2nds come from behind to record their first victory of the season.
Last season Maccabi 2nds swept all before them in the MJSL, but last season's treble winners have found life in the Manchester Accountants League tough so far this season. One point from their games hasn't perhaps merited their performances but at a higher standard the margins are a lot smaller.
At home to Barclays, the 2nd team found themselves 2-0 down inside 10 minutes due to two poorly defended set-pieces. Given the poor start to the season, Maccabi may have been forgiven for letting their heads drop after such a poor start, but Irving Modlin and Sheldon Lee’s boys are made of sterner stuff and quickly took control of the game with their free-flowing attacking football.
On 35 minutes a corner from Ben Gould was met by the head of Paul Clayton, after a scuffle in the area Simon Lester pounced on the loose ball to put Maccabi right back in the game.
The second half began as the first finished with a flurry of Maccabi attacks and it took only five minutes for Maccabi to get level. Jason Hamburger, who caused the Barclays defence trouble all game, accelerated into the box, only to be brought down. The ref gave the penalty and Gould converted to bring the teams level.
A third quickly followed for the boys in yellow, with Lester adding his second of the game before skipper for the day Jonny Davies converted a penalty.
Adam Herman rounded off an emphatic turnaround with a 35-yard screamer into the top corner.
The Maccabi managers were obviously delighted with the result and the team will be looking to kick on from here. Special mentions go to Louie Libbert and Paul Clayton who were superb in the win.
