Deadly doubles from Ryan Silvester and Alex Lee earned Maccabi 1st a terrific 5-0 victory over defending champions PWC.
After last week’s disappointing performance, Maccabi were looking to get back to winning ways and what better way to do this than against last season's winners.
This was never going to be an easy challenge, and with a few key players missing Maccabi needed to start well. The return of Alex Lee to the starting line-up could not have been better timed and it was his flicked on header which allowed dynamic winger Ryan Silvester to run through on goal and slot home nicely inside 15 minutes.
It was one-way traffic for the remainder of the first half, and a second goal duly arrived for Maccabi as David Herman’s late burst into the box and calm finish nicely capped off a flowing team move.
Lee was rewarded for his assist as Silvester set him free, one-on-one with the keeper; he kept his composure and rounded the keeper for an easy tap-in.
Despite the convincing 3-0 half-time score, the Maccabi management still demanded more. With some heavy pressure, a well-marshalled defence stood strong and Maccabi again got their reward. Captain Ashley Loofe picked up the ball in his own half and with a Pirlo-esq pass picked out forward Lee who, with one touch to control, slotted home with his second.
Wonderkid Sam Hatton caused the PWC defence problems throughout down the right and, after another lung-bursting run, Hatton won a penalty for Maccabi. Silvester stepped up dispatched the spot-kick confidence to finish off a well-deserved victory.
Maccabi manager Martin Simons said: "The hunger and desire to win the ball all over the park was fantastic.
"It was important that we got back to winning ways and I can’t fault today’s performance."
