Lions Green notched up their second win thanks to strikes from Sam Collins and Scott Ackerman against KS.
Finally, it all came together for Pollock and Meltzer’s men in a hard-fought victory at Rowley Lane. Lions have been threatening this all season; intricate passing, swift movement and eye-catching attacking play - the key difference today being their solidity at the back.
It has been a tough start to the season for Lions, playing a number of the top teams in the cup and league, and despite only racking up one win and one draw, they have looked more than comfortable competing at this level. The combination of youth and experience is beginning to pay dividends for Lions and it promises to be an exciting end to the year for this team.
In a competitive fixture, the Lions came roaring out the traps creating a number of early chances, only to be denied by the impressive KS ‘keeper. Despite having the majority of possession, Lions failed to make their dominance show and found themselves tied at half-time.
The second half began with much more of the same; Ben Winters pulled the strings in the midfield and Jason Green, Scott Ackerman and Dan Reuben all came close to breaking the deadlock.
Lions finally got their reward in the 70th minute. James Fox, who worked tirelessly at right full-back, fed the ball to Steven Black out wide, he cut onto his left foot and whipped the ball into the penalty area. Sam Collins reacted quickly to the first bounce, controlled the ball and thumped the ball hime to send Lions 1-0 up.
In recent weeks, Lions have been very vulnerable after scoring, but today was different. The team remained composed and defended well.
Then, with 10 minutes to go, they got their second. Winters played yet another defence-splitting pass that found Scott Ackerman through on goal. The tricky winger shimmied one way and went the other around the ‘keeper before cooly rolling the ball home for 2-0.
The relief at full time was plain for all to see and you just get that sneaky suspicion that this is the start of a things to come from this side, who will look to go into the fixtures against Shacharit Donetsk, Faithfold and Hendon aiming for nine points out of nine.
