A late goal and an "over-the-top" celebration sparked a confrontation which left a London Maccabi Lions stalwart shaken.
Just moments after missing a penalty in the cup match between Brady Maccabi and the London Maccabiah Masters, Josh Newman, a former Lions player, scored a late winner before running over to volunteer assistant-referee Dave Snelman and holding the Brady badge in front of his face.
As our photos show, in the aftermath, Snelman was goaded by Newman’s brother, Dave, who had been substituted. Snelman responded by chasing him down the touchline before players from both teams intervened in the dispute.
Josh Newman, who this week declined to comment, was substituted immediately after the incident.
Brady chairman Joel Nathan said: "We have formally apologised to Lions for what was an over-the-top goal celebration.
"Dave Newman apologised to Dave Snelman face-to-face, while Josh Newman tried to phone him, although he did not answer the call. Whether or not he wanted to accept the apology, I don’t know.
"The clubs have a very close relationship on and off the pitch and I have spoken to and emailed Lions chairman David Pollock to calm the waters, and also emailed Mr Snelman. How I deal with the individual players will be sorted out within the club."
LMM player-manager Dan Jacobs commented: "I have no desire to fan the flames of what I saw as a wholly unsavoury and unacceptable incident.
"Joel Nathan assured me that he would deal with the incident internally which I fully trust him to do."
Brady won the Peter Morrison Trophy tie 3-2.
