Coombe Hill also impressed in the combined team scores part of the competition, taking home the Lawrence Fisher Cup for the best nett.
The Metropolitan Tournament is a major competition in the calendar of events, run by the Association of Jewish Golf Clubs & Societies.
The event is open to the Southern clubs and societies with affiliates entering teams of eight men and four women.
The midsummer date proved to be the hottest June day for 40 years and the heat made for a very tough round for the competitors despite the excellent presentation of the course by the host club.
Coombe Hill dominated the Ladies categories, with Delyth Roberts beating her team-mate Anna Suh to win the Shirley Porter Cup for best Singles gross.
The team trophies in both the men’s and ladies sections are calculated by the aggregate of the best three out of four scores and Coombe won the Jubilee Cup for best Team nett and the Abridge Cup for best Team gross. Ruth Langdorf of Dyrham broke the monopoly, winning the Sonia Bowman Cup for the best nett score.
In the men’s section, Liam Francis of Abridge produced a top quality round of 71 to win the Potters Bar Cup for the nett singles and the Gerald Tankel Cup as runner-up to best gross score.
However, he was eclipsed by one shot by Nicky Harris of Hartsbourne whose superb gross score of 70 secured the Coombe Hill Trophy and contributed to Hartsbourne winning the Hartsbourne Bowl for Men’s Team Gross score. WAGOS lifted the Dyrham Park Cup for the best Team nett.
The prizes were presented by Howard Joseph, the captain of Dyrham, together with Gill Julius, the lady captain.
* Mike Sheldon of Whitefield GC won the Singles gross title at the Northern Met Golf Tournament at Moor Allerton.
Sheldon scored an excellent 79 to triumph. Danny Taylor of Leeds JGS was runner-up, followed by Edward Morris who edged out Notts & Sheffield team-mate Aaron Selman to the best nett score.
The season of events, organised by the Association of Jewish Golf Clubs & Societies, has moved into the busy summer segment.
The event began in a combination of high wind and rain and, although the sun appeared during the latter part of the day, the wind meant that all competitors faced tough scoring conditions.
The Ladies prizes were dominated by Notts & Sheffield JGS with Sue Stone winning the Singles Nett and Gross. Her colleague, Linda Newman, was runner up in both categories.
Leeds JGS took home the Shirley Trophy as runners-up to Notts & Sheffield who won the Carolyn Barnett trophy for the Best Nett team ladies return.
Notts & Sheffield’s were less dominant in the men’s competition although they won the Lee Park Trophy for the best Team nett, edging Whitefield into second place who took home the Edmonstown trophy.
The Northern Metropolitan is a competition that promotes mixed representation of the participants. Notts & Sheffield JGS collected The Lord Bellwin trophy for the best men’s and ladies combined aggregate nett score, with Leeds JGS receiving the Moor Allerton trophy as runners-up.
