November 26 is National Cake Day. And who doesn’t love the sweet stuff? Many of us would have treated ourselves to a slice with our weekly dose of GBBO; but now that Peter has waltzed (or perhaps line danced off) with the title, maybe we’ll need new justifications to indulge. So get that oven on and pick one of these traditional Jewish bakes to help you celebrate: 1. Rocking Rugelach: Shannon Sarna's raspberry and white chocolate rugelach are a twist on the Ashkenazi bake that is a traditional Chanukah treat. 2. Say cheese: I'm not sure we can claim it as our own, but we do eat a lot of them and Shavout is all about delicious cheesecakes. This Israeli version from the lovely Limi Robinson's book The Girl From Tel Aviv is divine. 3. An apple (cake) a day: We bake enough apple cakes for Rosh Hashanah to class them as a Jewish bake, and Silvia Nacamulli's perfectly parev apple and cinnamon bake is a first class example. 4. Bake up a babka: With its newfound fame on GBBO, the very Jewish loaf is having a bit of a moment. Sharon Lurie's recipe has a South African twist. 5. Doughnut forget Chanukah is coming: Like it or not, the festive season is looming, so how could we forget, our favourite, sufganyot, the sweetest of treats. These chestnut cream-filled treats work well at this time of the year.
