Sela loses five-set thriller at US Open

articlemain

Dudi Sela tumbled out of the US Open after losing a five-set thriller against 18th seed Pablo Cuevas at Flushing Meadow.

There was an element of déjà vu as Sela came up against the Uruguyan for the second successive year in the opening round in New York.

Last year the Israeli lost in four sets, but he pushed Cuevas all the way this time. After losing the first two sets 3-6, 3-2 Sela looked as though he was going to bow out tamely.

But the Israel rallied to win a blistering fourth set 6-0 and take the fourth 7-5.

Both players needed medical treatment in the final set before Cuevas prevailed 6-3 in a little more than three hours.

Diego Schwartzman of Argentina went down in straight sets against compatriot Martin Del Potro 6-4, 6-4, 7-6.

There was also disappointment for Camila Giorgi who bowed out in three sets against Samantha Storsur 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 in the Ladies Singles.
