PETER MORRISON TROPHY QUARTER-FINAL

LEEDS MACCABI vs MACCABI LONDON LIONS SPARTANS
MJSL champions Leeds Maccabi are missing three key regulars for the Jewish FA Cup last eight meeting against Lions Spartans (See team news).

There’s no doubting that Sunday will be Leeds’s toughest match of the season. They have done fantastically well to win the Joan Collins Premier Division, but Lions are a totally different proposition to what they’re used to playing week in, week out.

They did well to beat Woodford in Essex in the last round, but manager Dan Kristal and co have their work cut out, even with home advantage.

Ahead of kick-off, Kristall told JC Sport: “Lions are one of the favourites for the competition with the wealth of players that they have to choose from.

“We expect a young and fit side to travel up to Leeds and they come as big favourites for the game as they play in a semi-pro league.

“I am also led to believe that the Morrison is "win at all costs" in their list of priorities this season, so we are under no illusions as to the quality of squad that they will bring up.

“We will welcome to the "carpet pitch" at Squirrel Way which I'm sure will rival their home pitch at Rowley Lane. The pressure is on Lions!

“My team will go out and enjoy themselves with absolutely no pressure. We have been superb this season and have nothing to lose, with a big Feldman final at Boundary Park round the corner as well as a Shonn semi next month.

“This is in addition to the MJSL title which was our main aim for the season. The Morrison is just a bonus for us this year, but we will sure give it a "right Yorkshire go".

The Lions have an wealth of talent on their books, but manager Andy Landesberg knows that the tie poses a potential banana skin.

He told JC Sport: "This is a very tough match for MLL, with a game last night (Wedneseday), and another one on Saturday, Sunday's trip to Leeds is less than perfect.

"We will again field a team that will contain seven players aged 21 or under. I just hope the quantity of games we have played in the last two weeks won’t be that little bit too much for us.

"Nevertheless, this is a team/squad that is fully focused on getting us into the semi-finals at the very least. They are all up for the away trip to Leeds and know that there can be and will be no excuses, we are coming to win and that is the strong feeling in the group and at Rowley Lane.

"We know Leeds Maccabi will also be giving everything they have to get into the next round. They will also have a point to prove, and show us what they are all about.

"This is a tough match for us and are completely aware that we will need to be at our very best to be able to enjoy the trip back down the M1.

"This is a special Cup, it's one we want to win badly, and being able to make the trip north makes it that little bit more exciting for everybody. We will be taking nothing for granted and expect a tough and competitive match. It’s Match of the Day and bed for my Boys Saturday night!"

The scene is set for a crackerjack of a football match, and even though the Lions have had matches on Wednesday and Saturday, I expect them to deliver.

JC team news: Leeds are missing the cup-tied Jordan Marks and Bradley Lander. Indeed Lander will be playing against his regular club and was “heartbroken” when the draw was made. The in-form Rob Selwyn is away, while Johnny Goldstone will have a late fitness test on his “dodgy” knee. Richard Black returns after missing the away win at Woodford in the previous round. Veteran Daniel Ross is trying to shake off a groin injury and expects to play.

AC MILL HILL vs LOS BLANCOS
It’s winner-takes-all at the Lodge as second division Mill Hill host first division Blancos.
Blancos moved into pole position to take the runners-up spot last weekend when they edged home 4-3 against Blizzard Storm.

That man Simon Moses took the plaudits once again after coming away with the matchball, with the evergreen Adam Hersh adding the gloss.

A win or even a draw will be good enough for the Blancos boys on Sunday, with a quarter-final meeting against either London Rovers or Camden Park up for grabs.

Ahead of kick-off, Blancos boss Jonathan Ison told JC Sport: “After a very convincing display last week against Blizzard, we 're hoping to replicate that this week against ACMH.

“Moses will be looking to add to his hat-trick from last week, with those around looking to chip in too.

“The likes of Hersh, Kutner, Heynes and Waters to name, but a few are all capable of getting goals week in week out, and Moses is going to need assistance in order for us to win the BGT!”

The prospect of a clash between Mill Hill’s main man Ben Zloof and the mercurial Moses will be worth the admission fee alone, but home manager Dan Beresford would happily take an ugly victory as long as it got them through.

Either way, he’s hoping for a strong performance ahead of next week’s crunch clash against FC Team C.

Beresford told JC Sport: “We’re missing a lot of players and it’s going to be tough as we need to win by two or more.”

HENDON UNITED SPORTS CLUB A vs NORSTAR LONDON RAIDERS A
David Garbacz has described Sunday’s crunch clash against title rivals Raiders as “a must-win” in what is effectively a title decider, even though nothing will be won or lost.

Some believe the recent cup win, courtesy of a fine early finish from David Seitler, will give Hendon a slight psychological edge, but that will all be forgotten once that first whistle blows.

Hendon kept Raiders at arms-length that day, but I can see L’Orange giving them a sterner test this time.

Hendon’s recent draw against FC Team opened things up for Raiders who know that a victory of any description would virtually secure the title, as they have games in hand.

The tension is bubbling nicely ahead of kick-off, although Hendon fans will be concerned to hear they have some key men missing, especially in the attacking third, while Raiders have named a full-strength squad.

But Garbacz told me he “believes he knows where NLR’s weakness lies in what promises to be an enthralling encounter.

Speaking exclusively to JC Sport, Garbacz said: “It is marvellous that the season comes down to this huge must win game between the best two teams in Jewish football.

“For us nothing less than three points will do – with the greatest of respect to Raiders remaining opponents a draw is not enough and we will be going all out for victory on Sunday.

“We know they will be nervous – they will probably not be too sure whether to stick or twist and I feel all the pressure is on them.

“We have not lost to them for many seasons and this will be playing on their minds. Previous matches between us have been quite cagey but I expect this one to be far more open.

“We have enormous respect for them as a team and a club and but when it actually comes down to it – when they have always been the bridesmaid – will they have the bottle to do us on Sunday ? Fasten your seat belts because this will be an absolute cracker.

Asked what he has learnt from Hendon’s two previous meeting against L’Orange, Garbacz commented: “They are strong all over the park – their defence and keeper are water-tight and the midfield will hound you and bustle you all day and up front they possess potential match-winners.

“However, we believe we know where the weakness lies and we will be exploiting that particular area to the full.

“We have our own match-winners and they know it. The first goal is so crucial though – if they score first they will be exceptionally hard to break down. They are a great team, but we go into this match totally full of belief that we will get the job done.”

As for where the game will be won and lost, he added: “This match will be more open than previous encounters which could potentially suit both teams. Although we are missing the brilliant Yoav Kestenbaum, we have unearthed an absolute diamond this season in David Seitler and they will know how dangerous he can be. If they double up on Dave this will leave space for the likes of Greg Corin and Ben Lauffer to exploit.

“We cannot afford any mistakes at the back – one error and our league title has gone – we will try to stretch the play and attack their full-backs and get in behind them.

“We must not let the likes of Liron and Stocky have too much space or they will kill us. The key could well be which one of the big four turn it on the most – those two for Raiders and Seitler and Greg for us.

NLR have nothing to lose on Sunday. Defeat would not end their title hopes. Far from it. With Neasden and FC Team to follow, it’s still all to play for.

Rob Richman’s troops have responded magnificently since the cup defeat against Hendon. Back-to-back 4-0 away wins have lifted everyone in the camp. Now they are ready for the ultimate test.

Richman told JC Sport: “We all know the importance of this game on Sunday. We have put in a lot of hard work across the season and that has put us in a really strong position with just a month of the season to go.

“Quite simply a win for us on Sunday and we would need just a point for the title. There will be no holding back and we will be going all out for the victory.

“It’s a great opportunity to show how strong we are and also to make up of the disappointment of the Peter Morrison Trophy exit to Hendon. We obviously respect Hendon, they are an excellent side but we fully believe we are the better side and we will be looking to show that Sunday morning.

“David and Hendon will no doubt mention their better head-to-head record, but that is all in the past and it will have no bearing when we come out on Sunday. The two previous games this season between our sides have been very close and tight encounters and we are very focused on making sure we come out victorious this time round.

“We had the luxury of resting both Stock and Engleman last weekend to get them ready for Hendon. Whereas we were missing a few important players for the Morrison game a few weeks ago we are at full strength on Sunday.”

As Garbacz says, the first goal is crucial, with the key battle, for me, between the Hendon defence and Raiders attack.

JC team news: Yoav and Avishai Kestenbaum, Alex Rosenthal, Avidan Last and Tali Nevies are all out for Hendon. Both Kons return after being away and Yehuda Korman is back and available for one week only.

FAITHFOLD A vs NORTH WEST NEASDEN
Emotions will be running high at the Hive as Faithfold fans prepare to bid farewell to outgoing manager Zuriel Solomon.

One of the most loyal custodians in the MGBSFL, Solomon has enjoyed many highs, both as a player and a manager, and his players will be looking to give their gaffer the performance and result he deserves.

It’s been a struggle at times this season for the Superhoops, but as defending champions Hendon found out, they are capable of beating anyone on their day.

Looking ahead to Sunday, Solomon told JC Sport: “I’m feeling a bit emotional as this will be my last game as manager of Faithfold, but we hope to go out on a high.

“We were narrowly beaten by Neasden last time out, but the pitch was a bit of a leveller.

“We know their strengths and must ensure we match their commitment to get the right result.”

Neasden boss Stirling Kay got the performance but not the result he wanted in the cup semi against Hendon last week. They caused the holders major problems, but it just wasn’t to be.

With their tails up and three key men returning, Kay hopes they are able to do the business in the name of survival.

Kay told JC Sport: “We go into this game very much with our confidence on a high, as although we went out to Hendon, we showed as a squad we can hold our own withe best.

“We played Faithfold two weeks ago and won the game in the 90th minute. It was a very poor game, so we know we have a big battle to get the three points.

“By Sunday lunchtime we will know what we have to do to stay up. And whatever we have to do, my team will not be found wanting as we’re determined to finish the season on a high.

“I must give a special mention to our chairman and goal keeper Steve Murad and his wife, Dani, who had a baby boy this week. We are delighted for them both.”

Neasden are desperate for the points, but I expect Faithfold to produce the performance that ensures their manager bows out on a high.

JC team news: Faithfold are missing Benjy Dymant.

Neasden welcome back Zak Mcleod, Rob Caplin and Danny Sherman. They will give late fitness tests to Joe Brooks and Adam Arnold, both of whom have ankle injuries.

FC TEAM A vs HARMEN
5-2 winners over Team in September, Harmen go in search of the win that would virtually secure third place.

The Morrison semi-finals still have plenty to play for this season, but they shouldn’t under-estimate opponents who recently took points off treble-chasing FC Team.

James Gershfield fired a hat-trick in the first meeting and he was at it again last Sunday, hitting the target three times in an impressive 4-2 success in Redbridge.

Ahead of kick-off, Harmen joint-manager Joel Alterman told JC Sport: "Last week we showed real character, with only 11 fit players available. We went to a very good Redbridge side and showed our quality to comfortably beat them and close the gap on them for third place.

"This week we want to leapfrog them to make third place ours. We know that with three wins out of our final three league games of the season, which is a very achievable target, we will be holding on to that spot come the end of the season.

"FC Team have been performing below expectations all season and I think they are unlucky to be in the bottom three. They will be hungry for the points on Sunday to pull further away from the bottom two, and with games in hand over all the teams around them they will be eyeing a rapid ascent up the league.

As mentioned, Team have come on in leaps and bounds in recent months and revenge will be on their minds.

Head coach Ben Gilbey told JC Sport: “We are full strength for Sunday, probably with one of the strongest squads I have had for a game all season.

“We are hoping to extend our unbeaten run to four games. Harmen are no doubt a good team, but it does seem that if you can keep Gershfield quiet, you stand a good chance in getting a result.

“I feel things have really started to click for us recently and I expect nothing less than another good performance on Sunday, and to take three points away from the game.”

It’s game on!

JC team news: This week is probably too soon for Ricky Rinder and Harmen expect him to make his return on April 12.

WOODFORD WANDERERS vs MACCABI LONDON LIONS BLUE
The Lions have a golden opportunity of completing what would be their only league double ahead of the long trip to basement battlers Woodford.

Jamie Kyte’s boys know Woodford are still fighting but the east Londoners show no signs of turning things around as Aviel Schwarz prepares to take on his former club.

Neither side has set the world alight this season, but the Lions will be determined to pick up the win that would secure their Premier Division status in their final game as the writing is on the wall for the Wanderers.

BRIXTON OLD BOYS vs BRADY MACCABI
Brady can as good as secure third spot when they travel to a Brixton team for whom Sunday is last chance saloon.

The Rowley Lane boys are finishing the season strongly and I believe their fresh legs will pay dividends against opponents who have won just twice in the league all season.

Brady go into the game bang in form. They’re unbeaten in seven and have won their last four. Consistency was an issue during the first half of the season, but with some of their big names firing, it could be a long morning for Brixton.

That said, Brady, much like Brixton, have been leaking goals, so don’t expect Alan Aaronson’s boys to go quietly.

FC TEAM C vs OAKWOOD B
Sunday is huge for FC Team C. It’s important they go into next week’s promotion showdown with AC Mill Hill in the box-seat and a draw, or even better victory, would give them just that.

I expected them to have the runners-up spot wrapped up by now, but there’s no doubt their recent blip has been affected by nerves. Yes they may boast some big names and yes they may have completed the double over their championship-winning B-team, but they are human after all.

Having excelled on duty for the A’s against Hendon recently, Team player-manager David Gordon is confident his big-match players will deliver. The stakes couldn’t be higher right now.

He told JC Sport: “This is a huge game for us this weekend and a win is the minimum we need to take from the game.

“Our form hasn’t been good recently, but we have been extremely unlucky in a couple of games with late goals costing us.

“We all thought we would have promotion sewn up by now, but it’s going to the wire and we’re going to have to perform at our very best if we want to finish in second place.”

But they can expect no favours from an Oakwood side who are flying at the minute. They breezed through their Barry Goldstein Trophy group with great momentum, with Jacob Richler-Kleiman scoring for fun.

My visit to Oakwood’s training ground this week was met by a typically hospitable Jason Stein.

He said: "Good day DC. I've got a lot of respect for Team C and we had a great tussle back in January that we lost 3-2 from 2-0 up. I've spoken to David Gordon about it since and he's admitted they were lucky. We certainly feel we owe them one.

"We've underperformed in the league this season. There is no question about that and I'll hold my hands up. When you drop seven points from 87 minutes onwards it's not a coincidence but a problem. It haven't met our own high standards.

"However we've improved on last year’s lacklustre effort under a certain unnamed predecessor and our four wins in a row coming into this game showcase the real side I am building. There seems to be a bit of revisionism in terms of the Oakwood B job I inherited.

"Nonetheless, we should have done better and we can do better.

"There is a real determination to take 4-6 points from our last two league games against Team C and Team B and I know the league are still investigating whether we will be awarded the three points for the abandoned Mill Hill game. The chance is there for us to end the league campaign on a high.

"We're excited."

With Adam Stolerman and the boy Richler-Kleiman on the pitch, goals are guaranteed and I expect Team to go into the Mill Hill game with all to play for.

JC team news: Competition for quarter-final places is high, and Adam Blin returns after a few weeks out. Josh Berkley is back from a one-match ban, but Oakwood B are more or less unchanged.

CATFORD & BROMLEY MACCABI vs AC WHETSTONE
It’s the end of an era on Sunday as AC Whetstone prepare to bid farewell to the MGBSFL.

The team are disbanding ahead of university life and I’m sure the boys will be looking to give joint-managers Anthony Cohen and Clive Nathan the perfect send-off.

Philippe Auret was their two-goal hero in their first meeting against the Cats, when both sets of fans went home happy after a 2-2 draw.

Whetstone have completely sold out of their away allocation as the team goes in search of their sixth league win of the season.

Nathan told JC Sport: “It's our last ever game this Sunday, so we are taking all 20 players. It will be emotional.”

Relegation looks inevitable for the Cats who have conceded an alarming amount of goals in recent outings.
The must beat Whetstone in order to give themselves a fighting chance and have more than pride to play for when they go into their final game against L’Equipe.

But I can see Whetstone playing with freedom and delivering the result that matters.

REAL SOSOBAD vs FAITHFOLD B
A top-quality affair is on the cards as third-placed Sosobad host fourth-placed Faithfold.

Having missed out on automatic promotion, the Superhoops will attempt to stop Sosobad doing just that, and with striker Dan Gordon bang in form, they will be quietly confident of derailing the hopes of the Essex boys.

Gordon and keeper Dan Kosky were the key men in last week’s 4-3 thriller against Lions, with boss Rob Shooman describing top cat Kosky as the best stopper in the league. No doubt Shooman believes they have a big performance up their sleeves as they look finish bow out with a bang.

But the Sosobad boys have their sights firmly set on second place. They have three games in hand on King Crown and as one of the league’s form sides, will look to plug the six point gap on Sunday.

Ahead of kick-off, Sosobad boss Dan Shafron told JC Sport: WWe are excited about meeting Faithfold again. Despite the 0-0 scoreline last time out, this was personally one of my favourite games we’ve played this season.

“It was played in the correct manner with crisp passing, good attacking play and some excellent defending from both teams. It was a well fought battle and I expect the same again this weekend.”

KS REUNITED vs TEMPLE FORTUNE
The league’s bottom two go head to head, with Fortune needing to win to stand a chance of avoiding the wooden spoon.

Jonathan Cohen’s boys gave a good account of themselves in the Barry Goldstein Trophy, but the focus now is on earning a result that would pile the pressure on KS.

Fortune showed good character to come from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against KS in October, when Matt Leader and Darren Zitren registered.

Looking ahead to Sunday, Fortune boss Jonathan Cohen told JC Sport: “In what looks like our last game of the season, we know we have to win to stand any chance of not finishing bottom of the league and we are determined to do so.

“We say goodbye to top goal-scorer Zack Rich who played his final game for Fortune last week and we wish him all the best.

“But we are bringing in former TFFC player Bobby Benson for his second debut for the club. We also welcome back seven players that played in the Jewdinese win who were not available last week in the BGT.

“With an earlier than usual start we need to make sure we get to bed early!”

It’s been a tough first season for KS. Like Fortune, they haven’t scored enough and have struggled to keep them out.

No-one wants to finish bottom of the pile and I expect boss James Lewis to set his team up in a way that ensures they come away with at least a point.
