Maccabi Tel Aviv to play Chelsea in Champions League group stages

articlemain

Maccabi Tel Aviv will begin their Champions League group phase at the home of Premier League champions Chelsea.

Having beaten Swiss champions Basel on away goals, Slavisa Jokanovic's troops were drawn in Group G, with Porto and Dynamo Kiev completing the line-up.

Commenting on the draw, Jokanovic tweeted: "Tough group. We will respect our opponents and give our all on the pitch."

Maccabi, who started the defence of their Ligat Ha'Al title with a 3-2 victory over Bnei Sakhnin last weekend, will play home and away in the six-match group stage with the first game being played at Stamford Bridge on September 16, with the return match in Israel on November 24.

The Tel Aviv club has strong links to Chelsea, with Jokanovic and Tal Ben Haim former players of the London club.

Israel striker Eran Zahavi has been a key figure in Maccabi's European run so far with important goals helping them overcome FC Viktoria Plzeň and Maltese minnows Hibernians in earlier rounds.
